Model Overview

First generation

The Kijang was developed in the 1970s by Toyota Indonesia based on the popular Toyota Land Cruisers. With the aim to build a cheaper and more suitable for the home market SUV, it was the beginning skeptical because the land Crusier be proven for 20 years. Despite the skepticism, the initial planning began in secrecy in 1973. With a two-year period of development, the models were finally shown to the world public debut at the Jakarta Fair show. Series production was until then by Toyota not taken into consideration, since you looked at the Land Cruiser to be unbeatable. The great appeal as well as the input of thousands of written inquiries changed that opinion quickly and you could finally begin in 1977 with the serial production of the Toyota Kijang in Indonesia. A year later came the delivery of CKD kits at a Philippine company. There they built the model as Toyota Tamaraw.

There were four different body styles to choose from and a variety of engines. So there was the Kijang as minibus, Pikap with one or on request with 2 cabins. Also got a van to choose from. In the Philippine Tamaraws, there were also too long versions of the pickup truck as well as a version with a framework plan.

As motorization there was the 1.2-liter petrol engine with 3K 57 kW (77 hp). In the Philippine model, the model selection was far greater. Here further were also the 4K engine of Toyota with 65 kW ( 89 hp ) to choose from. From other engine manufacturers, there was the 1.3-liter Pinoy engine (Ford Motor Company ) and the 1.6 -liter engines Fiera I, II and Fiera Fiera III (also from Ford). From Chrysler -Mitsubishi, there was the 1.4-liter Neptune engine. This came a little later in the Kijang for use

Dragon Motor Vehicles, a local Filipino car maker, has recognized after the success of the Tamaraw and shopped the design licenses. Shortly thereafter, unique models the company produced under the brand name Dragon. Also Nissan and Carter Motors have recognized the popularity of the model and also bought the licensing rights to the design. To further the competing models Nissan Bida, which was distributed by Universal Motors emerged; and the Carter Masa.
