Udon Thani Province

Udon Thani ( Thai: อุดรธานี ) is a province ( Changwat ) in Northeast Thailand, Isan. The capital of the province of Udon Thani Udon Thani is also called.

Location

The province is located in the northern part of the Khorat plateau and offers the characteristics of a highland. In the hot season the soil is dry and parched in the rainy season the country is, however, frequently flooded. The Phu Phan Heights divide the province from north to south into two parts.

History

The area was inhabited over 6,000 years ago and brought the first Bronze Age culture of Southeast Asia, if not the world, show how the finds at Ban Chiang show. Udon was later part of the old empire Dvaravati. Since the 9th century, the area was part of the Khmer Empire. Ramkhamhaeng eventually expanded his kingdom at the expense of Sukhothai Khmer and took, among other things Udon. 1817 came the Thai Phuan from Laos and settled in Ban Chiang.

In the 1960s, the stationing of American soldiers brought an economic boom for the Vietnam War. It was one of the largest airports in the country and an extensive red light district. What remains is a relatively well-developed transportation system.

The province is divided into 20 districts ( Amphoe ). The circles are further subdivided into 155 subdistricts (tambon ) and 1682 villages ( Muban ). The missing numbers 12-16 were among the Amphoe, from which the province Nongbua Lamphu was formed in 1993.
