Construction was officially January 1, 1956, the commissioning of the reactor was on 19 October 1957. The reactor was also used to train operators for the nuclear power plant in Dresden.

The reactor was a joint project of the General Electric Company, Pacific Gas and Electric and the Bechtel Corporation.

In the grounds is a small research reactor with a maximum of 100 kW of power still in operation. Furthermore, there are laboratories for metallurgical analysis of irradiated materials and for the production of radioactive sources for medical and industrial applications.
