Vereux

Vereux is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Vereux situated at an altitude of 200 m above sea level, 10 km north-east of Gray and about 43 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the west of the department in which Talniederung west of the Saône.

The area of ​​9.02 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Saône Valley. The eastern border is always along the Saone, which flows through a roughly two kilometers wide Alluvialniederung south. The flood plain is on average 195 m. The river is expanded to the waterway, and in the region of Vereux a channel runs parallel to the Saône, so that the river is preserved here in near-natural state. From the river, the municipality's area extends westward across the Talniederung and a 30 m high, steep slope to impact on the adjacent plateau. This consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly sediments of the upper Jurassic period and is located at 240 m. On the plateau dominates agricultural use, but there are also some forest areas. With 253 meters, the highest elevation of Vereux is achieved northwest of the village. On the west, the area extends into the grove of the Bois de Vereux.

To Vereux the settlement La Résie (201 m) is in the low country of the Saône. Neighboring communities of Vereux are Montot, Denèvre and Dampierre- sur-Salon in the north, and Autet Beaujeu -Saint -Vallier- Pierrejux -et -Quitteur in the east, Montureux -et- Prantigny in the south and Oyrières in the West.

History

Remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement site and aqueduct point to an early settlement of the municipality. From the Merovingian period 12 graves were discovered, which contained numerous grave goods. The name changed with the passage of time by Apud verum over Veruz, Vereul and Vereulx the present Vereux. In the Middle Ages Vereux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local rule was up to the Lords of Beaujeu, after which there was a longer time with changing ownership. With the invasion of the Protestants under the Duke of Zweibrücken in 1569 the village was devastated. Together with the Franche -Comté Vereux came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Vereux is a member of the 42 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières.

Attractions

The church of Saint - Léger, built in the 18th century. For remarkable Interior features include a marble pulpit, stucco altars from the 18th century, furniture and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Population

With 258 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Vereux one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891, 365 people were still counted ), a population growth was recorded during the 1970s again. Since then, there were only relatively small fluctuations.

Economy and infrastructure

Vereux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. The water power of the Saône was formerly used for the operation of mills. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses, including a sawmill. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Gray after Combeaufontaine. Further road links exist with Oyrières and Montot.
