Dampierre-sur-Salon

Dampierre- sur-Salon is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté. It is the capital of the canton of Dampierre- sur-Salon in the arrondissement of Vesoul.

Geography

Dampierre- sur-Salon is located at an altitude of 201 m above sea level, 14 km northeast of Gray and about 36 km west-southwest of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the west of the département, in the valley of the salon, shortly before its confluence with the river Saône.

The area of ​​18.80 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the rolling countryside of north-west of the Saône. From northwest to southeast, the area is crossed by the valley of the salon, which divides into two branches at Dampierre for a short distance. The Alluvialniederung has a maximum width of one kilometer averages 197 m. The Salon valley is about 30 m deep sunk into the surrounding plateaus which are on average 230 m.

Southwest of the town of Salon sufficient ground to the Grove of the Bois de Vereux ( to 241 m). History

Traces of a Gallo- Roman settlement site point to an early settlement of the municipality. On the hallway La Rameuzelle stone sarcophagi were found in the 19th century, originating from the Burgundian (6th century).

Probably early as the 7th or 8th century was built on the island between the two rivers of the Salon, the settlement Dampierre. Over time, the town developed into an important town whose fortifications were seven meters high and 1.5 meters thick and were armed with several towers. In the Middle Ages Dampierre belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The Church's rule has held the abbey Beza. The town and its surroundings belonged to the late 14th century the noble family of Dampierre. Then the rule passed to the Lords of Vergy and finally to the Pontailler. Together with the Franche -Comté Dampierre came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. In 1746, the rule of Dampierre was raised to Marquisat.

Along the salon soon developed industry, which was dependent on hydropower. Important for Dampierre was a blast furnace with forging and foundry. The operation of the blast furnace was set in 1860. Attractions

The Church of Dampierre- sur-Salon was built in the late 18th century. It has a rich interior, including a pulpit ( 17th century ), paintings from the 18th century and numerous grave plates ( 16th to 18th century). The old town is characterized by several town houses with towers, the parts back to the 16th century. The birthplace of Charles -Maurice Couyba is from 1789. Among the former fortifications are only a few get wall foundations. In characteristic style of the Haute- Saône Mairie - Lavoir was built in 1828 by architect Louis Moreau. Population

With 1314 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Dampierre- sur-Salon is one of the smaller towns in the Haute- Saône. Since then, the population has again declined slightly.

Dampierre- sur-Salon has long been a town that was dominated by trade and commerce, the ironworks and the processing of agricultural products of the surrounding area. Today Dampierre- sur-Salon is a small center that accepts central functions for the surrounding region. There are numerous companies of small and medium enterprises, mainly in the areas of metal processing, precision engineering, woodworking, construction and transportation industries. The village has a College, a cinema and a retirement home and various sports facilities.

Dampierre- sur-Salon is located off of the larger passage axes at a department road leading from Gray after Combeaufontaine. Further road links exist with Seveux, Beaujeu, Champlitte and Roche -et- Raucourt.
