Montefiascone

Montefiascone is a town with 13,530 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio. She is a Roman Catholic titular.

Name

The name Montefiascone so can be derived from the Latin Mons Faliscorum ago probably, the mountain Faliscans.

Geography

Montefiascone is located 94 km northwest of Rome, 127 km south-east of Siena and 17 km north of Viterbo. The municipality is located in the Monti Volsini volcanically formed on the southeast shore of Lake Bolsena. The old town occupies a the highest elevations. The municipality covers an altitude 220-633 m asl

The municipality comprises the villages Carpine, Cipollone, Commendam, Coste - Pelucche, Fiordini, Mosse, Poggetto, Poggio Frusta, Stefanoni and Zepponami.

The neighboring municipalities are Bagnoregio, Bolsena, Capodimonte, Capranica, Marta, San Lorenzo Nuovo and Viterbo.

Geology

Montefiascone located in a volcanic formerly active region, the so-called Apparato Vulsinio. The city itself is located on the caldera of one of the four major volcanoes. Lake Bolsena itself was created by the collapse of underground magma chambers. On the volcanic past still remember numerous thermal springs in the area.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (slightly endangered).

Traffic

Montefiascone is located on the strada stadale SS 2 Cassia, which leads from Rome to Florence via Siena. The nearest highway exit on the A1 Autostrada del Sole is 33 km Orvieto. The town has a station on the railway line Attigliano - Viterbo.

Religion

Montefiascone was in the 14th century to a bishopric, which was annulled on 30 September 1986. In 1980, it was still one of 34,178 Catholics in 20 parishes, which were attended by 45 diocesan priests, 9 religious priests. The diocesan territory was with three other dioceses (including the titular Aquipendium ) the diocese of Viterbo incorporated and added Montefiascone in 1992 in the list of Titularbistümer.

Policy

Andrea Danti ( PdL ) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His center-right list also with 13 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council. He replaced Nando Fumagalli, who did not run. So far, the city was ruled by the center-left alliance.
