Vetralla

Vetralla is a city in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region Latium, located about 13,539 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It is located 68 km northwest of Rome and 16 km south of Viterbo.

Geography

Vetralla lies in the volcanic hills of the southern Tuscia, with its deep valleys, near the Lake Vico. It is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini.

To Vetralla consists of the quarters Cinelli, Cura, Giardino, La Botte, Mazzocchio, Pietrara and Tre Croci.

The neighboring municipalities are Barbarano Romano, Blera, Capranica, Caprarola, Monte Romano, Ronciglione, Villa San Giovanni in Tuscia and Viterbo.

Traffic

Vetralla situated on the state road SS 2 Cassia, which leads from Rome over Viterbo to Florence. In Vetralla the SS branches from 1 to linking the site with the Via Aurelia at Tarquinia. In the districts of Cura and Tre Croci has the community stations on the regional railway line Rome - Viterbo FR3.

History

At the end of the Roman era, the population went from about two kilometers away from the present site Stadtforum Cassii to the current dominant and easily defensible position. Since the Sutric donation Vetralla belonged to the Papal States, from 1110 to 1134 the Lords of Viterbo. In 1145, Pope Eugene III. Vetralla, where he tried to escape from the Roman violence and fighting, the 2nd crusade with the bull Quantum praedecessores on. Long disputed between the Papal State and the Lords of Viterbo, Vetralla came under the rule of several noble families connected to the Pope as the Orsini and the di Vico.

Massimo Marconi ( PdL ) was elected in May 2006 to the mayor. His center-right alliance also with 13 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council.
