Villayón

Villayón is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain.

Location

The community is bounded by Navia in the north, to the west of Coaña, Boal and Illano, to the east by Valdés, Tineo and Allande in the south of Allande.

History

The top two fields of the arms relate to the crest of Navia, the lower large field to the cattle wealth of the region.

As almost everywhere in Asturias confirm findings from the Stone Age, the early settlement of the region. Several hill forts of the early Asturians and other Celtic tribes can still be seen today. The Romans had several forts and bridges still exist from this period that are still in use.

By the year 1868 Villayón is incorporated in the comarca of Navia and receives as last church independence.

Natural site

The predominantly of limestone, shale and sandstone base, with the Carondio ( 1,221 m) as highest point, is typical of the region.

The municipality is crossed by the River Navia. The waterfalls of Oneta ( Cascada de Oneta ) are the largest of Asturias. The Arbon Lake is a mountain lake and a major tourist destination.

As in many parts of Asturias prevails here due to the proximity to the Gulf Stream, an almost Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers but cold winters ago, in the fall it comes sometimes to relatively strong storms.

Economy

As in many parts of Asturias, agriculture is the largest source of income here. Specifically, the livestock industry (as well as the emblem recognizable) and beekeeping are the outstanding specialties of agriculture. Because of its location on the Rio Navia, the tourism industry is conceived especially for nature lovers, canoeists and anglers very strong in growth. Trade and production takes place only in medium-sized companies.
