Walter Underhill

Walter Underhill ( born September 12, 1795 in New York City; † August 17, 1866 in Whitestone, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1849 and 1851 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Walter Underhill was born in the late 18th century in New York City and grew up there. He enjoyed a good education and then worked as a trustee at the Houses of Refuge. Underhill was for several years treasurer of New York City. Then he sat 1845-1866 the Board of Directors of the Society for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents in New York City and 1857-1866 as its treasurer. Politically he belonged to the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1848, Underhill was in the fourth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William B. Maclay on March 4, 1851. Since he resigned in 1850 to a bid again, he retired after March 3, 1851 from the Congress. In 1853 he became president of the Mechanics & Traders' Insurance Co. in New York City, a position which he held until his death on August 17, 1866 in Whitestone. His body was interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City
