Geography

Geographical location

Wernau is located on the right bank of the Neckar, south of Plochingen and about 25 km east of Stuttgart. Already in 1818, the natural dynamics of the Neckar was terminated by a lowered, artificial riverbed the plant. The subsequent replenishment of the Neckar oxbow lakes began in 1820 and was successively in several steps. The gravel extraction which progressed initially Neckar up, already reached in 1939, the marginal zones of the present lakes ( Big and Small Lake ). In 1981, the Wernauer lakes were declared a nature reserve. The area now comprises about 45 acres. Another 5.5 -acre sanctuary on the territory of the city is the Wernauer clay pit.

History

Wernau was built in 1938 from the places Pfauhausen and Steinbach. 1384 and 1681 were attempts to form a community, has been abandoned after a short time.

After the Second World War, many expellees and refugees came from Hungary to Wernau. On April 1, 1968 the town was granted the city rights.
