William II, Count of Nevers

Wilhelm II ( Guillaume ) ( † August 20, 1148 ) was a Count of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonnerre out of the house Monceaux. He was a son of Count Rainald II of Nevers and his second wife, Agnes of Beaugency.

Life

Wilhelm led to the Crusade of 1101 its own contingent in the east, accompanied by his younger brother, Robert. After a march through Italy he sat from Brindisi to Romanien ( Balkan ) over. He reached Constantinople Opel shortly after the Count Stephen of Blois and Stephen of Burgundy were about to launch with its Lombard army into Asia Minor. In an effort to catch up with them, he continued his march hurry away only to this by the Dukes Wilhelm IX. to be missed of Aquitaine and Welf IV of Bavaria, who were in turn arrived in Constantinople Opel. Wilhelm lost track of him marching forward Stephane in Ankara and therefore decided to turn against Konya. A conquest of the city failed, after which he moved on towards Cilicia. At Heraclea he fell in August 1101 in an ambush of the Seljuks under Kilij Arslan I, the fully aufrieben his army. Only William and a few faithful could escape alive from the battlefield to Tarsus, while his brother probably was among the fallen. From Tarsus, he reached out a few weeks later the safe Antioch. In William's army probably moved with his brother Joscelin of Courtenay also, later Count of Edessa.

Back at home, the French supported William King Louis VI. thicknesses in the fight against the barons. After he had taken part in the fight against Thomas of Marle 1115, he was captured on his way to Nevers Count Theobald II of Champagne ( Theobald IV of Blois ). It was not until 1119 he was released. 1124 Wilhelm joined the royal army which marched against Emperor Henry V up to Lorraine. In 1126, he supported the campaign of the king in the Auvergne.

1146 Wilhelm gave his estate to his eldest son and entered as a monk in the monastery of La Grande Chartreuse, where he died.

He was married to Adelaide, about whom nothing further is known. Their children were:
