Windsor Spitfires

The Windsor Spitfires are a Canadian ice hockey team from Windsor, Ontario. The team was founded in 1971 as a junior team. It plays since 1975 in one of the three highest Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League ( OHL ). Already from 1945 to 1953 played under the name Spitfires a junior team in Windsor.

History

After several years in youth hockey, the Spitfires played as a junior team from 1945 to 1953 in the Ontario Hockey Association. With Al Arbour, Glenn Hall, Marcel Pronovost and Terry Sawchuk four future members of the Hockey Hall of Fame playing in the team.

After the founding in 1971, the team played four years in the Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League. There, Jack Oakes Trophy was won in 1973 and the team was able to finish as the best team in the regular season the next two years.

In 1975, the Spitfires were ( today's OHL ) resumed in the expansion of OMJHL after 22 years of abstinence.

In 1980 the team won the first division title. However, the Peterborough Petes were a title as champion of the OHL in the way. 1984, the team of Peter Karmanos Jr. was purchased and renamed in Windsor Compuware Spitfires. 1988, qualified as the winner of the Spitfires OHL for the Memorial Cup and reached the final there. Here failed the team at the Medicine Hat Tigers. After Karmanos the team in 1989 sold it to Steve Riolo, the name change has been undone.
