Wolfgang Pietzsch

Wolfgang Walther Pietzsch ( born December 21, 1930 in Wittgendorf at Zittau, † December 29, 1996 in Leipzig ) was a German grandmaster in chess. In the 1950s and 1960s he was one of the strongest champions of the GDR.

Life

Wolfgang Pietzsch learned chess from his father and joined in the secondary school years of Zittau chess section.

After graduation, he studied mathematics and physics in Leipzig in Leipzig. After working as a teacher in diving, and later as a teacher in vocational and high school education (BMA ) on the operation of the vocational school VEB Leipzig electroplating and during his last working years as a lecturer at a Leipzig University of Applied Sciences.

Pietzsch was the father of a daughter and a son. His hobbies were filming and photography.

Chess Sports

As a 18 -year-old Pietzsch was first in 1949 in Bad Klosterlausnitz champion of the Soviet occupation zone and shared a little later in the tournament in Grossroehrsdorf first place with Lothar Schmid, the master of Soviet Occupation Zone in 1947.

During his studies, he played for the unit east of Leipzig, later SC Rotation Leipzig. After the founding of the GDR, he won three times, the East German championship, namely in 1959 in Leipzig, 1962 in Gera and 1967 in Colditz. Six times he represented the GDR at Chess Olympiads. There he won among others in Helsinki on August 21, 1952 against Lodewijk Prins, in Munich on October 21, 1958 against Heinz Lehmann, in the Leipziger Messe Ring House on November 2, 1960 against Harry Golombek and at Lugano on November 6, 1968 against Larry Evans; He also played at the Olympic Games 1962 in Varna and in 1966 in Havana.

His chess development was encouraged by the formation of a power center in Leipzig. In 1965 he crowned his career at Inter chess tournament in Leipzig Liberson and Kavalek. At the FIDE Congress 1966 in Havana him the title of Grand Master was awarded as second DDR Players by Wolfgang Uhlmann.

End of the 1960s, Pietzsch retired from competitive sports, not least because of the chess sport was at a disadvantage in the GDR in the early 1970s more and more. However, he still played until the 1980s at LVB Leipzig. Pietzsch also was active in width like chess events (simultaneous events) and as a solver and auditors of chess compositions.

In the Elo rating list he was represented until his death with a rating of 2420. His best historical Elo rating was 2611th This he achieved in May 1966.
