Záhorie

Zahorie ( German: ( Vindish ) Marchauen, Hungarian: Erdőhát ) is the unofficial name of a landscape in the west of Slovakia, as well as the official name of a corresponding Tourism Region (Slovak Záhorský región cestovného ruchu ).

Designation

The name means to German as " land beyond the mountains ". This probably refers to the Little Carpathians in the east it limiting. In the west, the landscape ends at the March and is the Slovak part of the Morava valley, which extends up to the Austrian wine district and geologically belongs to the Vienna Basin.

In the geomorphological classification of Slovakia the term Záhorská nížina is ( lowland Zahorie ).

The residents of Zahorie that Záhoráci (literally: "Behind Bergler " ), speak a characteristic reminiscent of the Czech dialect. They are also traditionally the subject of numerous jokes and ironic comments of the Slovak population and comply in this regard about the castle countries in Austria or the East Frisians in Germany.

Some of the area is forested, for the most part but it is used for intensive agriculture, where such use is limited by the scarcity of water and the resulting irrigation.

Important cities in the region are Malacky and Stupava. Administratively, include the following districts for Tourism Regions:

  • Malacky (except the municipalities Borinka, Stupava and Marianka )
  • Myjava (only the municipalities Brezová pod Bradlom, Bukovec Košariská and Priepasné )
  • Senica
  • Skalica

Conservation

From the perspective of conservation of both the West of Zahorie, which borders to the Marchauen and the East is extending into the Little Carpathians, interesting. Therefore, large parts of Zahorie under protection.
