Zavodovski Island

Zavodovski Iceland is an uninhabited volcanic island of the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic.

Zavodovski is 350 km southeast of the main island of South Georgia in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands. They, along with its neighboring islands Leskov and Visokoi the archipelago of Traversayinseln.

The circular island, the northernmost of the Traversayinseln, has a diameter of about five kilometers. The ever- smoking stratovolcano Mount asphyxia ( 14.5 km circumference, height 551 m, last eruption 1819) dominates the western part of the island, while the eastern part is a low-lying lava field.

Here is one of the largest populations of chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarcticus ). The island is opened to tourism since 1982. There is a weather station, which is operated by the South African Institute South African National Antarctic Programs ( SANAP ).

History

The discovery and naming in 1819 by the German Baltic Antarctica sailors Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. Bellingshausen named the island after Lieutenant Ivan Sawodowski, the captain of his ship Vostok was.
