Žiar nad Hronom

Žiar nad Hronom ( until 1927 slovak " Svätý Kríž " - to 1955 " Svätý Kríž nad Hronom "; German Holy Cross at the Gran, Hungarian Garamszentkereszt - to 1888 Barsszentkereszt - older even Szentkereszt ) is a town in central Slovakia.

Geography

The city is located on the right bank of the river Hron at its confluence with the stream Lutilský creek and is located in the valley Ziarska kotlina. To volcanic mountains like Kremnicke Hills are located in the surrounding area ( north ), Vtáčnik (northwest ) and Štiavnica Hills (to the south ). The city is located 40 km from Banská Bystrica and 170 kilometers from the capital Bratislava.

The districts are Sasovske Podhradie ( German castle village, incorporated in 1971 ) and Žiar nad Hronom, with the eingemeindeten village Horne Opatovce ( German apple village on Gran, also Opatdorf 1969 amalgamated ).

History

The city Žiar nad Hronom was already mentioned in 1075 for the first time as a villa Keresztur in terra Susolgi writing. A settlement called Cristur was recorded in 1237, which in 1246 the town was chartered and developed in the following centuries as a small agricultural town in the county bars. Although the local fortress never fell to the Turks, they were together with the city of insurgent troops of the Kingdom of Hungary several times conquered and destroyed in the 17th century. 1706 burned the whole city from the Gothic church. 1828 are listed 136 houses and 955 inhabitants. During the Second World War the city on 31 January 1945, conquered by the Red Army. A complete beginning for the city was the establishment of the only aluminum plant in Czechoslovakia in 1953, making the city gained through regional awareness. As a result of the establishment, the small town with 1,500 inhabitants transformed into an industrial town of about 20,000 inhabitants.

According to the census of 2001 living in the city of 19,945 inhabitants. After nationalities:

Attractions

  • Renaissance - Baroque country palace, which was built in 1631 on Regulation of the Archbishop Péter Pázmány and was at times the episcopal summer residence of the bishops Banskobystricky
  • Classicist Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in 1813, on the site of an older Gothic church
  • Laurentius church in Horne Opatovce which remains the only building from the 1969 defunct village
  • Ruins of the castle Sasov east of the city

Economy

The main employer in the town is the aluminum producer Slovalco, which earlier Závody Slovenského národného povstania said.
