Zileuton is an inhibitor of 5 -lipoxygenase activating protein (FLAP ) inhibitor. It acts selectively and reversibly on the 5 -lipoxygenase, which produces the released during inflammation leukotrienes LTA4, LTB4, LTC4, LTD4 and LTE4.

Zileuton is used in the U.S. as a drug with mild to moderate asthma. An effect is also expected against other inflammatory diseases, but yet to be confirmed by studies.

In Germany there are no approved finished product with this ingredient.
