Zinder (Region)

The Zinder region is one of the seven regions of Niger and is located in the south of the country. Its capital is Zinder. The region has 3,556,239 inhabitants ( 2012).

Geography

Zinder bordered on three sides by more Nigerien regions: to the east of Maradi, in the north of Agadez and Diffa in the west. South of Zinder are the Nigerian states of Jigawa, Katsina and Yobe. In its geological structure of the region is mainly in the east of the Quaternary era and especially in the West attributed to the Mesozoic era. In the south include smaller portions for Precambrian era

In the north of the region is the up to 710 meters high Termit Massif, extending to the southern foothills of the Valley of the Dilia de Lagane up in the neighboring region of Diffa.

History

The Zinder region dates back as an administrative unit in 1964 created the department of Zinder. 1998 Zinder was converted as all previous Nigerien departments in a region. The region was affected by the hunger crisis in Niger during the years 2004-06.

Population

The majority of the population in the region are the Hausa with 69%. Other ethnic groups in Zinder are Kanuri with 13%, 9%, Fulani, Tuareg and Tubu with 7% with 1%.

Economy and infrastructure

In the Zinder region, there are 2277 primary schools, of which 25 are private schools. The gross enrollment rate was in the school year 2009/2010 64.9 % ( nationwide 72.9 % ) in girls 59.2 % ( nationwide 63.9 %). At a primary school teacher average of 35 students ( 39 nationwide ) came. The primary school completion rate was 39.7 % ( nationwide 49.3 % ) in girls 36.5 % ( nationwide 41.5 %).

Subdivision

The Zinder region is divided into ten departments Belbédji, Damagaram Takaya, Dungass, Gouré, Magaria, Kantché, Mirriah, Takeita, Tanout and Tesker.
