Preseason

As in the previous season, the number of Oberliga was again reduced to two teams. With 15 teams now had the league almost back to the originally planned capacity of 14 participants. By the descent of the two East Berlin teams ( motor Oberschoeneweide and Vorwärts Berlin ) in the preseason, the North -South divide in the league had more aggravated. Of the 15 Oberliga rotation were the two northernmost representative Babelsberg ( Potsdam district ) and locomotive Stendal ( district of Magdeburg ). The former state of Mecklenburg was not a single Oberliga. The capital of East Berlin was also not represented.

Course of the season

For the first time all the climbers were able to compete in the big leagues. In contrast with Dessau and Stendal rose from two of the founding teams of the league. Dessau never reached again after the top flight. For Stendal, the regulation had a negative impact, that finish level on points of Torquotient decided on the better placement instead of - host a playoff - as in the 1949/50 season. So had unit east of Leipzig at the end just as many points as Stendal, with 0.754 compared to 0.745 but a minimally better Torquotienten ( at the goal difference Leipzig was worse than Stendal -13 -14 even with gates ).

Master was superior turbine Erfurt, after occupying the standings on 15 matches and then did not issue again. Last year's champion Dynamo Dresden came late in shape and was nevertheless still a third party. Bismuth Aue, in the preseason Second, a long time was promising at the top, but was weaker in the second half.
