Background

A substantially identical starting field as in the previous Grand Prix of Germany was also reported for the Grand Prix in Austria. Only the first time came into appearance at the Grand Prix of Great Britain team Connew was back in addition at the start. In addition, Ferrari decided not this time on the use of a third car and BRM Peter Gethin came back instead of Reine Wisell to the course.

As is customary at the time, the first corner of Austria ring was passed non- harassment, thereby indicating high average speeds.

Training

Seven different vehicles qualified for the first eight starting positions. The pole position gained the leading in the world championship standings Emerson Fittipaldi on Lotus. Next to him, Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni qualified for the front row. This was followed by Jackie Stewart on Tyrrell and Peter Revson McLaren in series two to Brabham driver Carlos Reutemann, Matra factory driver Chris Amon, the second McLaren works driver Denis Hulme and Tim Give to Surtees.

Race

Despite its third launch site succeeded Stewart to take the lead immediately. Behind him followed Fittipaldi and Regazzoni, who had gone from the first row of the grid, and Hulme, from the seventh rank of a good start was successful.

After a few minutes Regazzoni had problems with the fuel supply, and thus became slower. However, he succeeded nevertheless to keep Fittipaldi to the fourth round behind. Stewart benefited from this situation, as he was able to settle easily. On lap 13 Regazzoni finally had to completely give up the race.

Fittipaldi finished within a few laps the gap to Stewart and passed him on lap 24. Three laps later also Hulme walked past Stewart, who dropped further in the following rounds. Peterson took over in the meantime the third place before because of problems with the fuel supply to give up and Revson had to leave the stage rank.

The duel for the lead between Fittipaldi and Hulme lasted until the end of the race, with Fittipaldi always just kept his nose in front. With his fourth victory of the season and now 25 points ahead in the championship on points runner- Hulme and Stewart in only three races Fittipaldi moved very close to winning the title.
