1974 UEFA European Under-23 Championship
The second U -23 Football Championship, also known as the Second European youth teams, was held from 1972 to 1974. It was attended by selected teams of players under 23 years of age from 21 organizations. The European title won Hungary after two finals against the GDR. Defending Czechoslovakia failed in the quarterfinals at the final opponent of the EM 1972 USSR.
The teams from the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria dropped out in the group stage. The Switzerland took part in the competition, as opposed to the first edition in 1972, not in part.

Mode
The 21 registered teams were divided into five triples and three groups of two, the " every man for himself " a determined group winners, in home and away matches. The group first reached the quarter-finals; from this round, the participants of the next round were played in a knockout system in return game. To determine the winner, the away goals rule and the penalty shoot were used in point - and Torgleichheit first time.
