1982 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship

The Volleyball Women's World Cup 1982 took place from 13 to 25 September in Peru instead. China won the title for the first time. The Games were held in Lima, Arequipa, Trujillo, Ica, Tacna and Chiclayo.

Mode

The 24 participants played in the first round in six groups of four. The two best and the two worst teams in each group were combined in the second round each to two groups of six. The results were taken against direct competitors. Then all ranks were determined in placement games.

Boycott

For political reasons, the really skilled Eastern European participants from East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania boycotted the tournament. As a replacement Nicaragua, Spain, Chile, and were invited the Federal Republic of Germany. Since Nicaragua, however, also waived participation, played the second team of the host out of competition with.

Qualification

The host Peru, and the defending champion Cuba and the Soviet Union as an Olympic champion in 1980 were set. The other participants who did not come as a replacement for the boycotting nations for the World Cup, qualified for their good placement at the European Championships in 1981 or at the continental championships in the NORCECA, South America, Asia and Africa.
