1987 Men's European Volleyball Championship

The Volleyball European Championship Men 1987 was held from September 25 to October 3 in Belgium. Germany was not represented among the twelve participants. The games were held in Ghent, Auderghem / Oudergem and Genk. The Soviet Union became the ninth consecutive European Champion.

Mode

First, a preliminary round was held, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The top two teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The third-placed and fourth played for places five to eight, the rest of the team to the ranks of nine to twelve.

Qualification

Belgium was set as host. The top three teams in the European championship in 1985 were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as the defending champion, the second and the third Czechoslovakia France.

22 teams played in four groups of eight other places. The top two teams in each group qualified for the final tournament. In Group A, Yugoslavia and Spain hosts prevailed in Cádiz. In group B, who played in Dunaújváros failed hosts Hungary and the GDR to the Netherlands and Bulgaria. For group C, which was held in Espinho, to Italy and Sweden qualified before the German national team and hosts Portugal.
