1990 Manjil-Rudbar earthquake

The Manjil - Rudbar earthquake in 1990 occurred in northern Iran at 00:30:09 clock local time on June 21, 1990 ( 21:00:09 June 20, 1990 UTC). It had a magnitude of 7.4; the hypocenter was 19 km depth.

Approximately 40,000 people were killed, about 60,000 were wounded. The quake was the one with the most deaths in 1990.

It caused widespread damage in an area within 100 km of the epicenter in the city of Rasht, about 200 km north- west of Tehran. The cities Rudbar, Manjil, and Lushan and 700 villages were destroyed and more than 300 other villages were affected. 100,000 built of mud brick houses were severely damaged or collapsed, and 500,000 people were left homeless. In the provinces of Gilan and Zanjan in the southwest of the Caspian Sea alone a loss of about seven million dollar was caused. The total damage was about eight billion dollars.
