2001 FIFA World Youth Championship
The 13th FIFA World Cup ( officially: FIFA World Youth Championship Argentina 2001) was held in Argentina from 17 June to 7 July 2001. 24 teams ( four African, 4 Asian, 6 European, 5 South and 4 North American and Oceanic 1 ) participated in the tournament. Spain, the world champions of the 12th championship in 1999 was not with us.
Hosts Argentina defeated Ghana in the final 3-0. Argentina thus secured the fourth title and is now the sole world champion. Third place went to Egypt, Paraguay defeated in the 3rd place match 1-0. Top scorer and best player of the tournament was eleven hits the Argentine Javier Saviola.
The German team survived the first time since 1987 the first round and reached the second round, in which one but with 2:3 lost to France. The junior teams from Austria and Switzerland failed to qualify for the World Cup finals themselves.
