2006 South American Women's Football Championship

The 5th Sudamericano Femenino (South American Women's Football Championship) was organized by the South African Football Association CONMEBOL and took place from 10 to 26 November 2006 at Argentina's Mar del Plata. Venue was the Estadio built for the Soccer World Cup 1978 José María Minella, in which all games were played. Hosts Argentina secured with a 2-0 victory over four-time title winner Brazil for the first time winning the South American Championship. For Brazil, this defeat was also the first against a South American colleagues.

Scorer was the Brazilian Cristiane that could achieve 12 hits during the tournament. The tournament was also the South American qualifiers for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 and the Olympics in the People's Republic of China. The South American champions and the Second qualified for the World Cup finals, the South American champions directly for the Olympic Games, while the second against the second in the African qualifiers had a playoff in Beijing.

Mode

For the tournament, all ten teams of the South American confederation had qualified. The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams. Within the groups played each team once against each other. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the final tournament in which each team played again against any other team. The points and goals scored in the group stage were not included. The point- best team in the finals was South American champions in 2006.

Argentina thus became the first South American champions and qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games, and together with Brazil for the 2007 World Cup. Brazil then won the decider in Beijing against Ghana and was thus also participate in the Olympic Games, where the team won the silver medal.
