2008 African Women's Championship

The African Cup of Women 2008 (English: African Women Championship, French: Championnat d' Afrique de football féminin ) was the eighth playout of the African Continental Championships in women's football and was held from 15 to 29 November in Equatorial Guinea instead. Venues were the capital Malabo and Bata.

Hosts Equatorial Guinea used his home advantage and was surprisingly African champions with a 2-1 final victory over South Africa. Thus, won by seven Nigerian triumphs in a row for the first time a different team the title.

Qualification

A total of 22 teams were registered for the qualification. The qualification was held in two knockout rounds in return game. In the first round, the 16 weaker nations came together. The eight winners determined with six other teams, the seven participants for the final round.

First round

It was played between November 30 and December 16, 2007.

2nd round

It was played between 24 February and 8 March 2008.

Mode

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team plays once against each other. The group winners and runners reach the semi-finals and play there in the knockout system "crosswise" against each other. The semi-final winners reach the final, the losers play for third place. From the semi-finals following a draw state an extension from the two by fifteen minutes and then if still no winner is a penalty shootout.
