2010 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship

The Volleyball World Championship for Men 2010 took place from September 25 to October 10 in Italy. The Brazilians were able to defend their title in the final against Cuba successfully. The German team reached the eighth rank and the best result since the World Cup 1974.

Mode

The tournament began with a preliminary round into six groups (A-F ), each with four teams. The draw was held in Rome on 28 October 2009. The top three teams in each group reached the second round, which was held in six groups of three participants. The group winners and runners of the second round played in the third round in four groups of three. With the same score not set the ratio, but the ball point quotient ( BPQ ) the order of the rankings decided. After the three group stages the placement matches followed by the ranks of one to twelve.

Schedule

First round

In Group A, the hosts started with two clear victories against Egypt and Japan. Argentina came second in the next round, while Venezuela could decide not set for itself.

The French were the competitors Czech Republic and Bulgaria, which progressed well, beat in the Group E first in the tiebreak. China had no chance with just winning a set. The German team cashed in Group F first significant defeat against Serbia and then succumbed to the group winners Poland in the tiebreak. Second Round

Germany lost in Group G after its successful debut against Puerto Rico, the encounter with the host and ultimately benefited from the victory of the Italians against the Caribbean team. In group M, France secured after the defeat against Argentina with a victory against the retired Japanese second place. The European champions Poland was eliminated in group N after two 0-3 defeats. Third Round

In the classification matches in Florence, Argentina won against Spain and the Czech Republic. The French won the game at the eleventh place.

Full Time

Brazil won for the third time in a row the title. For the defeated finalists from Cuba it was the biggest success since 1990 when they reached the final at the World Championships in Brazil. The Serbs won after two fourth places a medal again. Germany was number eight, a better result for a German team had recently given it to the fourth place in the GDR in 1974. Individual Awards

The new world champion had the most valuable player of the tournament in his team. For Cuba, it was enough despite the best blocker is not quite the title. The continental qualifying matches were held from December 2008 to August 2009.

Europe

The European teams played eight starting positions next to hosts Italy. In the first round there were two triple and quadruple groups. The group winners Belarus, Latvia, Romania and Montenegro qualified for the second round, which was held in two fours and two groups of five. In Group E, the German team won against the White Russians and Croatia, reaching a second group behind Slovakia, the third round. In Group F, the Netherlands and Estonia were successful. Africa

Asia

In the first round of Asian qualifying, in which four participants were identified, Tonga (group A), Pakistan and Bangladesh (Group B ) and all teams in Group C (Qatar, Oman and UAE) came on. The second round was carried out in three groups of four. The group winners Iran, Thailand and Kazakhstan as well as the runners- India reached the third round with two groups of four from which the top two teams qualified for the World Cup. In Group G China and Australia were successful against India and Thailand. In Group H, Japan and Iran prevailed against South Korea and Kazakhstan.

North and Central America

From the Association of NORCECA five teams qualified for the World Cup. In the first round, there were two groups of five, the winners of St. Lucia and Antigua / Barbuda reached the second round, which was held in two sixes and a group of seven. As group winners and second - Suriname, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, the Bahamas, Panama and Guatemala came on. The three winners of the four groups in the third round (USA, Puerto Rico and Cuba) were directly qualified for Italy. The runners-up and third in the group played a playoff round in which Canada and Mexico prevailed against the Dominican Republic and Panama.

South America

The South American qualifying was held with eight participants into two groups of four. In Group A Argentina against Colombia, Chile and Bolivia was successful. Venezuela became winner of Group B against Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador.
