(40463) Frankkameny

( 40463 ) Frankkameny is a main belt asteroid the middle, on 15 September 1999 by Canadian geophysicist and amateur astronomer Gary Billings from Calgary ( IAU code 681 ) was discovered from. Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid it had previously already given on 3 and 11 March 1997 at located on Kitt Peak outstation of the Steward Observatory.

Mean distance from the sun ( semimajor axis), eccentricity and inclination of the orbital plane of ( 40463 ) Frankkameny roughly correspond to the Dora family, a group of asteroids that is named after ( 668 ) Dora.

( 40463 ) Frankkameny was named after the American astronomer and civil rights activist Franklin Kameny ( 1925-2011 ) on 3 July 2012. Kameny was a significant LGBT activist. When Gary Billings read an obituary to Franklin Kameny, he decided to name the asteroid after him discovered by him. The dedication text wrote Richard Kinne of the American Association of Variable Star Observers ( AAVSO ), which is located at Harvard University. Billings had formerly been on the board of the AAVSO.
