( 7209 ) Cyrus is a main belt asteroid of the middle, which was discovered on 27 October 1960 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten couple and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld. The discovery came as part of the Palomar - Leiden Survey, which recorded by Tom Gehrels with the 120 - inch Oschin Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory field plates at Leiden University were screened. Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid it had previously already given on 24 February in 1958 under the provisional designation 1958 DJ1 at the Goethe Link Observatory, Indiana.
