( 8381 ) Captain is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered by the German astronomer frankness Börngen on 21 September 1992 at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg (IAU code 033). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had before the European Southern Observatory in Chile, where it already on 25 November 1981, the provisional designation 1981 WY8 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj and at 6 and June 8, 1991 at La Silla Observatory ( LY3 1991).

Mean distance from the sun ( semimajor axis), eccentricity and inclination of the orbital plane of the asteroid roughly correspond to the Vesta family, a large group of asteroids, named after ( 4) Vesta, the second largest asteroid and the third-largest celestial body of the main belt.

( 8381 ) captain was named on 10 June 1998 at the suggestion of sincerity Börngen after the German dramatist and writer Gerhart Hauptmann, who was in 1912 awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, " primarily known for his rich, versatile, excellent efficacy in the field dramatic poetry. " In 1985, an impact crater was named in the southern hemisphere of the planet Mercury by Gerhart Hauptmann: Mercury crater captain.
