Background

Fain and Webster wrote A Very Precious Love for the movie The Love of Marjorie Morningstar ( Original title: Marjorie Morningstar (1958 ), directed by Irving Rapper) with Natalie Wood and Gene Kelly in the lead roles. In the film the song was presented by Gene Kelly. The song received it in 1958 an Oscar nomination for Best Song.

The version of the Ames Brothers RCA Victor came to the American Billboard charts in March 1958; the version of Doris Day was in the UK at # 16 of the charts. Other cover versions of the song took on, inter alia, Urbie Green, Charlie Spivak, Harry Allen, Dick Haymes and Ronnie Wells.
