Aagtekerke

Aagtekerke is a village in the municipality of Veere in Zeeland. On 1 January 2005, the city had 1,489 inhabitants. Aagtekerke is located three kilometers from Domburg, six kilometers from West Chapel and four kilometers from Oostkapelle.

Tourism

Aagtekerke is not on the sea, but inside Walcheren. However, it offers to its tourists some accommodation on the beach to camp for example, guest rooms, holiday homes and the opportunity. 1999 143.700 overnight stays were recorded.

History

Aagtekerke was named after Saint Agatha, who was the patron saint of the place and today evangelical parish church until the Reformation. In surrounding villages Aagtekerke 's nickname hett geitedurp because the goat farm here earlier had a certain importance.

300 meters south of the village center there is a wooden corn mill from 1801, which replaced the then destroyed by a storm old mill from 1616. She was in operation until 1955 and is since 1998 owned by the municipality. It is a six-sided Zeeland ground-sailer windmill.

About two-thirds of the population belong to the Gereformeerde Gemeente. In addition to the Gereformeerde Gemeente the Hervormde Gemeente has a church in the village, which was built in 1625.
