Aart Jan de Geus

Aart Jan de Geus ( born July 28, 1955 in Apeldoorn ) is a Dutch politician ( CDA) and currently CEO of the Bertelsmann Foundation. Previously, he was Deputy Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris. De Geus was Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Cabinet Balkenende I and Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the Cabinets Balkenende II and Balkenende III.

Life and career

De Geus took a degree in accounting in 1975. He then studied Dutch Law at the Erasmus University, followed by postdoctoral studies at the Catholic University of Nijmegen.

From 1980, de Geus worked for the Federation of Christian Trade Unions ( CNV). In 1993 he was appointed Deputy Chairman with responsibility for social security, pensions, health and job creation. In this role he was also a member of the Dutch Sociaal - Economische Raad ( Social Economic Council). In 1998 he became a partner at the consulting firm Boer & Croon.

Political career

On 22 July 2002 de Geus was Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the Cabinet Balkenende I. On October 16, he took over the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. He was Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the Cabinet Balkenende II

In 2007 he assumed the position of Deputy General of the OECD. He left his ministerial post on February 20 this year and took over his duties in the OECD on March 5.

From 2011 to 2012 De Geus was also chairman of the Strategic Council of the CDA. On behalf of the Strategic Council, he presented the report " Selecting and connecting " on 21 January 2012 at the CDA party council.

Since 2012 Aart De Geus Chairman of the Bertelsmann Foundation.
