Abba Saul ben Batnit

Abba Saul ben Batnit ( = son of Batanäerin ) was a Jewish scholar of the 1st century AD and belonged to the so-called second generation of the Tannaim.

He was said to be the son of a proselyte from Batanaea ( Roman name for Bashan Bashan = ). He was a wine merchant and business partners of Eleazar ben Zadok. At various points, his honesty is highlighted.

He handed down a ( perfectly preserved ) satirical song about the arbitrary and frequent changes in the office of the high priest and the related irregularities.
