Abbeydorney Abbey ( or O'Dorney Abbey, Irish Mainistir Ó dTorna, common latin name: Kyrie eleison probably in allusion to the situation in Kerry) is a former Cistercian monk Abbey in County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland. The monastery ruin is situated nine kilometers north of Tralee in the north of the village of Abbeydorney.

History

The monastery was founded in 1154 and was a daughter house of Monasteranenagh Abbey ( Abbey Nenay ). Thus, it belonged to the filiation of primary Abbey monastery Clairvaux. Christian O'Conarchy, Abbot of Mellifont, retired to the monastery and was buried there in 1186. 1227 the monastery was involved in the conspiracy of Mellifont and his abbot was deposed. The monastery was dissolved in the time of Henry VIII in 1537, but remained monks in the monastery until 1577. The properties became the Edmund Lord Kerry, who received the title of Baron O'Dorney.

Buildings and plant

In ruinous state, the cruciform church are preserved from the 15th century, with the remains of the west tower and the enclosure building. The grounds of the convent is now used as a cemetery.
