Abbeymahon Abbey

Abbeymahon Abbey ( Irish Mainistir Ó mBamhna or Mainistir Ó Mbana, Mahon, Maure; Fons vivus ) is a former Cistercian monk Abbey in County Cork in the Republic of Ireland today. The former convent was 2 km east-southeast of Timoleague and a good 20 km southwest of Kinsale, not far from the south coast of the island, at the mouth of the River Argideen.

History

The monastery was founded in 1172 by Dermot MacCormac MacCarthy, king of Desmond, as a daughter house of Baltinglass Abbey in Aghamanister and thus belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey, at primary. Nearly a century later it was moved to Abbeymaure. 1278 Diarmait MacCarthaig was buried in the new monastery. In the 13th century the abbots of the relatively poor monastery were repeatedly blamed for not taking part in the General Chapter of the Order. At present, the monastery resolution (1541 or 1544) showed that the abbey church as a parish church and the other monastery buildings were used for agriculture. In 1568 the monastery to the Viscount Barrymore was left and 1584 on Nicholas Walsh, the judge of Munster, transferred.

Buildings and plant
