ABC or ABCPLus is a non-commercial, open standard for notation of music in text form (ASCII). He serves as an input and markup language in music software, as well as a storage format for music files.

General

The ABC music notation was published by the English mathematician and musician Chris Walshaw, primarily to record traditional monophonic melodies from Western Europe. ABC has been registered by Steve Allen as mime type files with text in this notation have the file extension "abc. ".

In contrast to similar standards Lilypond or MusicXML ABC is syntactically easy to read and can be well interpreted as a notation in text form by humans thus already.

ABC Text files can also be read from notation programs and sequencers and audio players, provided they support the file format.

History

Since its release in 1991, the options have been expanded and the ABC music notation also uses about to record complex classical compositions.

In early 2006, is the valid standard Version 1.6, Version 1.7.6 and 2.0 have been drafted. Various extensions to the standard are already used by some programs. Henrik Norbeck has created a version of the standard in BNF format.

Since December 21, 2011 there is the official version 2.1 of the language standards, which significantly broader software support enjoys as earlier drafts and isolated applications.
