MusicXML is an open file format for the exchange of music notes in modern Western notation.

General

The company Recordare LLC used and published, designed by Michael Good interchange format since 2004 and has developed and marketed plug- ins ( Dolet ) for the music notation programs Sibelius and Finale. In November 2011, the manufacturer of the music notation program Finale bought ( MakeMusic, Inc. ), the company Recordare and thus the rights to MusicXML.

MusicXML has been fully realized in an official standard format, the Extensible Markup Language ( XML) and is therefore very flexible and extensible. The original design is essentially an XML implementation of the Muse data format, supplemented by essential concepts of the Humdrum format (both academic formats ), and other important things.

The Document Type Definition (DTD) of the format is easily accessible and is subject to their own, those of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C ) modeled license that allows any free on-site.

MusicXML solved the Notation Interchange File used to go from format. Meanwhile, all common music notation programs and some sequencers support the import and export MusicXML files.

Permissible suffixes for MusicXML files are *. Xml ( uncompressed), and *. Mxl ( compressed using ZIP).

Example

To a clock ( measure ) in treble clef ( clef ), 4/4-time (time) and in C major (key) with a note ( note ) - middle C as a whole note - represent, the following markup is needed:

               test < / part -name>         < / part -list>                         1                     G < / sign >            2 < / line>
