Abdelaziz of Morocco

Abd al- Aziz (. Arabic عبد العزيز بن الحسن, DMG ʿ Abd al - ʿ b al - Azeez Ḥasan, also Mulai Abd al - Aziz, * 1880, † 1943) was Sultan of Morocco, Alawites in 1894 until 1908.

As the son of Alawidensultans Moulay al -Hassan I (1873-1894) ascended Abd al- Aziz to 14 years the throne. Due to his minority initially led Ba Ahmad, the chamberlain of his father, was the regency. This consolidated control over the tribes of the earth and struck down several revolts. He also defied pressure from the Europeans as to a development of the infrastructure, which would have considerably facilitates economic penetration of the country by the European powers.

After the death of Ba Ahmad Abd al - Aziz took over in 1901, the government personally. As an admirer of the Europeans he opened the country their influence. He attempted reforms in the administration and enforce the tax system. However, by his disregard old traditions, he intervened in ancient rights of different population groups, which provoked several revolts. By 1907 he had become in the eyes of the population as a champion of French interests. It was also the financial budget of Morocco, who had already been organized fairly well, completely shattered. This forced Abd al- Aziz to hold French bonds, such as the bond Gouvernement Imperial du Maroc which considerably strengthened the influence of the French government.

The independence of Morocco was also threatened by the France and Britain in 1904 their conflicts of interest in Morocco and Egypt clarified and France now got a free hand in Morocco. This growing French influence tried the German Kaiser Wilhelm II by his visit to Tangier counteract. By doing so the first Moroccan crisis ( 1905-1906 ) first led to confirmation of Moroccan independence.

Due to the increasing unrest and revolts in the country rose in August of 1907 Moulay Abd al - Hafiz in Marrakech in 1908 and forced his half-brother Abd al - Aziz to abdicate. Abd al- Aziz retired under the protection of European diplomats to Tangier, where he spent the rest of his life.
