Abellio

Abellio (also Abelio ) is in the Celtic mythology the name of a late ancient Gallo-Roman deity.

Etymology

Abellio was a local god in the Garonne Valley in the Roman province of Gallia Aquitania ( today's region of Aquitaine ), where it was found in Comminges several dedicatory inscriptions in his honor.

The name derives from the Celtic Abellio aball ( " apple " or " apple tree "). In most cases, a god of fertility and life is seen in him.

Etymologically depends Abellio very closely with insular Celtic legendary figures as Afallach, and the name of the Otherworld Avalon together, which is why even a death deity was believed in him. Also a connection with the name of the God Apollo, who in Crete Abelios ( Αβέλιος ) and was called by the Dorians Apello Italiern and it is suspected by some researchers.
