Abiskojokk

The Abiskojåkka ( North Sami Ábeskoeatnu ) is a river in northern Swedish National Park Abisko. It is the outflow of Abiskojaure. After about 10 kilometers, it flows near Abisko in the Tornetrask and is its main tributary. The drop from the Abiskojaure to Tornetrask is 147 meters. During the snow melts in the spring its water level is increased by several meters. Source of the river is the Abiskojåkka Kamajåkka, which flows into the Abiskojaure. The Kamajåkka, the Abiskojaure and Abiskojåkka have a combined length of about 40 kilometers. Overall, they drain an area of 544 km ².

Kanjon Abisko

In the Abisko Abiskojåkka flows through a canyon. The canyon was formed by erosion of the softer rock constituents.

Abisko delta

In the mouth of the Abiskojåkkas in the Tornetrask a delta has formed. It is composed of mud and gravel, to bring the Abiskojåkka. During the bird breeding season from May to July, access to the Delta is locked.

Flora and Fauna

In Abiskojåkka grayling ( Thymallus thymallus ), sea trout live (Salmo trutta ) and Arctic char ( Salvelinus ).

Birds on the river are the Black-throated Diver (Gavia arctica), the red-throated diver (Gavia stellata ), the Temminck's Stint (Calidris temminckii ), long-tailed duck ( Clangula hyemalis ), the common scoter ( Melanitta nigra), the red-breasted merganser ( Mergus serrator ), the Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula ), various dippers ( Cinclus ), the Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla ), the Spotted Flycatcher ( Muscicapa striata ), the Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica ), yellow wagtail (Motacilla flava) and the Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea).

On the shore area and the canyon of the Alps - Astragalus ( Astragalus alpinus ), the golden root ( Rhodiola rosea ), and various species of Silene grow ( Silene ) and the Saxifragaceae ( saxifrage ).

Malmbanan

During the construction of the Malmbanan a tunnel was blasted because it was easier to direct the flow through a tunnel, but to build a bridge for the railways for the Abiskojåkka at Abisko. Near the Abisko Turiststation a former House floor can be seen in the canyon. This house was a power plant station that provided electricity for the construction of Malmbaban.

Trails

The Royal Trail and follow the Nordkalottleden between the Abisko Turiststation and hiking hut Abiskojaure the course of Abiskojåkka. In addition, there are at Abisko several shorter trails to the river.
