Abraham Mignon

Abraham Mignon ( * June 21, 1640 in Frankfurt am Main, † March 27, 1679 in Utrecht ) was a German - Dutch painter.

Life

His father, a merchant, took him under in the still-life painter Jacob Marrel who brought him in 1660 to his Holland. In Utrecht, he worked in the workshop of Jan de Heem Davidszoon. In 1675 he married the daughter of the painter Cornelis Willaert († 1666), with whom he returned to Frankfurt in 1676. There he taught, among others, Maria Sibylla Merian, whose mother was married to Jacob Marrel.

Work

Mignon's work includes mainly the motives flowers, fruits and birds. Stylistically, his works are characterized by the brilliance of their colors and opulence of their motives. A commonly used screen layout shows a white or red rose in the center against a dark background.
