Abraham Sofaer

Abraham Sofaer ( born October 1, 1896 in Rangoon, Burma; † January 21, 1988 in Los Angeles, California ) was a British film and stage actor of Burmese origin.

Life

The son of Jewish parents studied educational sciences to become a teacher, but moved at the age of 19 years to London to pursue his dream of acting. After he had earned as a stagehand his maintenance, Sofaer in 1921 made ​​his debut as an extra in The Merchant of Venice. Only in 1925 was followed by more stage roles - especially in plays by William Shakespeare - and from the beginning of the 1930s he was both in London and on Broadway on stage.

1931 Sofaer also debuted as a film actor in the film drama Stamboul. Due to its Mediterranean exterior Jews, Arabs, Armenians, Turks, and Indians were preferred Sofaers film roles. Among his better-known roles included an appearance in the television series Star Trek. From the mid- 1950s, Sofaer settled in Hollywood. He is one of the few actors who did not accept the U.S. citizenship upon their arrival in the United States. By 1974, Sofaer was active as an actor, before he sat down to rest. As a private citizen was Sofaer as a typical example of a British cricket to his favorite sports mattered. He died at the age of 91 of heart failure.
