Abraham Usque
Abraham Usque ( Christian name Duarte Pinhel ) (c. 1520 in Lisbon; † after 1558 in Ferrara ) was a Portuguese- marranischer printer and publisher in Ferrara (Italy). In his workshop the "Ferrara Bible" was printed in 1553.
Life
Usque Abraham was born in the first half of the 16th century in Portugal as Duarte Pinhel. Usque fled to 1543 before the Inquisition to Italy and settled in Ferrara. In Ferrara, where, under the liberal policy of the d' Este family one of the largest Jewish communities in Italy had developed, he returned to Judaism. Here he teamed up with the printer Yom Tov ben Levi Athias ( Jeronimo de Vargas ), a Spanish ex - Marranos.
Based on several earlier translations, produced Usque 1553 a new translation of the Hebrew Bible into Judeo - Spanish. The so-called Ferrara Bible is titled Bible in Spanish, word for word from the true Hebrew translated by famous scholars. It is provided with the pressure privilege of the Duke of Ferrara (Con Privilegio del Señor Ylustrissimo Duque de Ferrara) and expressly approved by the Inquisition. The Ferrara Bible was launched twice. The "Christian" issue was dedicated to the Duke Ercole II d' Este, the " Jewish " Marrano patron of Gracia Nasi.
1553 printed Abraham Usque the Consolacam as tribulacoens de Israel his namesake Samuel Usque. In 1554 the Menina e Moça of Bernardim Ribeiro appeared. These two works are now considered classics of Portuguese literature.
After 1555 only Hebrew Prints by Abraham Usque have survived. 1558 lose track of him.
