Bernardim Ribeiro

Bernardim Ribeiro ( * 1482 in Torrão, † 1552 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet.

He was born in Torrao, Alentejo region and studied law in Lisbon ( 1507-1512 ). In 1524 he was appointed secretary of King John III. appointed by Portugal. In the last years of his life he suffered from mental confusion.

He wrote in another hand continued sensitive love story » Hystoria de menina e moça " (published in 1554, expanded version in 1557 under the title " Livro the saudades "). Ribeiro was also significant as a poet. With his Eclogues (" Eclogas ", published 1554 ) begins the Portuguese pastoral poetry.
