Abune Antonios

Abune Antonios ( Ge'ez ኣቡነ ኣንቶንዮስ, * 1927 in Hemberti ) was from 1 December 2003 to 2004 locum tenens and 25 April 2004 - February 2006, the third Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

After he spoke out against the interference of the Eritrean regime in church affairs, he was dethroned by the regime illegitimate and replaced by a non-critical or layman loyal to the regime ( Abune Dioscorus ). Since its dethronement, for ado the Eritrean Orthodox Church law was amended by the regime, Abuna Antonios has been held - the now 86 -year-old pontiff is officially under house arrest. His health was assessed in 2012 as worrying. Information about its current state does not give out the Eritrean regime.

Abune Antonios arrest on 27 May 2007 was commissioned by Amnesty International in an " Urgent Action " in June 2007.
