Systematics and distribution

The two species of the genus have been described many times in the past and umkombiniert. By assigning to a species, the taxonomist long time did not agree and it ruled several opinions before. The species were classified in Echinocactus, Escobaria, Gymnocactus, Neolloydia, Thelocactus and coryphantha. Charles Edward Glass described the end of 1997, the separate genus Acharagma. On the basis of recent molecular biological studies, a close relationship is excluded to Escobaria. Also by these studies, a direct relationship to Lophophora and Obregonia is displayed.

The type species of the genus Echinocactus is roseanus. A synonym for the genus is Escobaria sect. Acharagma N.P.Taylor.
