Achimenes

Achimenes erecta cultural form.

The plant genus Achimenes ( Achimenes ) belongs to the family of Gesneriad ( Gesneriaceae ). The approximately 24 to 26 species occur only in the Neotropics. Some varieties, mainly hybrids involving several species are used as flowering ornamentals, especially as houseplants.

Description

Achimenes species grow as perennial herbaceous plants, mostly terrestrial. They usually form tubers than outlasting. The often unbranched stems are erect to decumbent. The stalked, usually arranged opposite, simple leaves are more or less asymmetrical. The leaf margin is often perforated.

At the leaf axils, the flowers are usually too few together or individually are. The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers are fünfzählig. The five sepals are free. The five petals are fused Roehrig or plate- shaped; of the eye-catching, usually asymmetric " plate" name comes from. The fused with the base of the petals four stamens hanging out together at the tips. The ovary is almost completely up constantly. The discus is smooth. He curved style ends in a bilobed scar.

There shall be dry, bivalve seed capsules which contain many tiny seeds.

Dissemination

This species occurs only in the Neotropics. The species there are in Mexico and Central America. Only Achimenes erecta, the area extends to the Caribbean and Colombia.

The valid first description of the genus Achimenes took place in 1806 by Christian Hendrik Persoon in in Synopsis Plantarum, 2, p.164 type species is Achimenes coccinea ( Scop. ) Pers. Today a synonym of Achimenes erecta ( Lam.) HPFuchs. The same generic name Achimenes was also released by Patrick Browne in 1756 and Vahl 1791 with other type species.
