In the battle of Tobago during the Dutch war met in February 1677 maritime and land forces of the Kingdom of France and the United Provinces of the Netherlands in the Caribbean each other on the island of Tobago.
The Battle
The Dutch Admiral Jacob Binckes expected a French attack, organized the defense and strengthened the fortifications. A French fleet under Admiral Jean d' Estrées II reached in February 1677, the island of Tobago and landed troops, who should conquer an important fortress. On 3 March, the French fleet attacked the harbor on, many Dutch ships were destroyed, but the French suffered heavy losses and had to stop the attack. The land troops were embarked again, and the French retreated to Grenada.
In December of the same year d' Estrees returned with stronger forces and defeated the Dutch on 12 December.
